If the Domain Controller still thinks it's there because it wasn't properly decommissioned, why wouldn't this work? I've tried everything else that I could find. If you have orphaned items in the domain like old exchange server or domain controllers , you can delete them using adsi edit. This is a good idea to keep things clean, but it will not get you past the current issue.
A schema mismatch would be AD attributes that are present in one database not being in another. Server does not have the same scmea as Server nor does have the same attributes as which is why you have to do adprep. Exchange adds a whole new set of attributes to the existing schema.
