I try to extend C drive in Disk Management as I find that it is almost full. I shrink D drive and get unallocated space behind D drive. I right-click C drive but only find that Extend Volume option is disabled. Is a way to fix Extend Volume greyed out? Any advice is appreciated! In such a condition, you can delete the partition s between the to-be-extended partition and the unallocated space.
What you should know is that all data on the deleted partition will be lost. Thanks for your feedback. This thread was created in the Files, Folders and Search forum; the Microsoft management team has moved the thread to Performance and Maintenance forum. The partition users want to extend is not a NTFS partition.
There is no unallocated or free space on hard disk or the space is not contiguous and after the partition which needs extending. Users want to extend a primary partition, but, instead of unallocated space, there is just a free space right after the target partition.
Any idea why? This thread is locked. You can follow the question or vote as helpful, but you cannot reply to this thread.
I have the same question Report abuse. Details required :. Cancel Submit. Way 1 : Right click on the Start at the bottom left of desk; choose Disk Management. Way 3 : Use CMD tool. Execute diskmgmt. As far as I know, Disk Management has some limitations to manage your hard drive:. Disk Management can only extend the volume with the adjacent unallocated space to the right, if the unallocated space is not behind the target volume, the extend volume is greyed out in Disk Management.
Thus, you may meet the disk management all options greyed out problems. The cause to shrink volume greyed out : The shrink option will be greyed out if the selected partition does not have enough free space. Or the partition you operated is not NTFS file system. Thus, you could make sure you have enough contiguous free space to operate, or convert the partition to NTFS file system.
You could delete some useless files or uninstall the unnecessary program to free up space, or shrink other partitions to get a free space. Type diskpart to open the diskpart command prompt at the search box which next to the start button.
It will overcome the limitations of Disk Management. This freeware is a comprehensive tool for managing disk partitions. You could download the free disk partitioning software.
